Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis carried out official visits to Moldova and Sweden, οn Thursday, June 12, aiming to deepen bilateral relations and enhance cooperation across a range of sectors.

Mitsotakis was the first Greek Prime Minister to visit Moldova, a country aspiring to join the European Union. During his visit, he met with Moldovan President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Dorin Recean.

Discussions focused on the mutual commitment to strengthening ties and expanding collaboration, particularly in trade, the economy, and the energy sector. Greece also expressed its readiness to provide expertise in supporting Moldova’s reform efforts in line with EU standards.

In talks with president Sandu, Mitsotakis emphasized Greece’s contribution to Moldova’s energy security. He highlighted the strategic importance of natural gas transmission from Greece to Moldova and Ukraine via the Interconnector Greece–Bulgaria and the broader Vertical Gas Corridor, underlining its role in bolstering European energy resilience.

The Greek prime minister pointed to promising prospects for cooperation in renewable energy, a field where Greece plays a leading role, as well as in regional connectivity projects. The leaders discussed key regional and international developments, with particular attention to the situation in Ukraine and its EU integration path. Mitsotakis briefed Sandu on Greece’s perspectives regarding regional dynamics, Greek-Turkish relations, and the Cyprus issue.

Meeting with Swedish Prime Minister in Stockholm

Later in Stockholm, Mitsotakis met with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. The two leaders explored ways to further enhance bilateral cooperation, especially in the fields of economy and defense, and addressed broader issues of European concern.

One key topic was Greece’s initiatives on child protection in the digital age. Mitsotakis presented Greece’s “Kids Wallet” program, and both leaders discussed the potential for joint European actions to safeguard children from digital addiction.

Artificial intelligence also featured prominently in their discussions. Mitsotakis underscored the need to strike a careful balance between innovation, technological growth, and effective regulation of digital platforms and tech companies.

The meeting concluded with an exchange of views on Europe’s economic competitiveness and the importance of advancing collective European defense initiatives.
