Restoration works on two of Greece’s most iconic Olympic venues – the main stadium and velodrome at the Athens Olympic Sports Complex (OAKA) in Marousi are set to begin after a 61.35-million-euro contract was signed this week.

METKA ATE was awarded the contract following a public tender announced in January.

Works are scheduled to be completed within 14 months from the signing date, with an anticipated finish by July 2026.

The agreement was signed by Ioanna Batsou, Chair of OAKA’s Board of Directors, and Dinos Benroubi, Vice-Chairman and CEO of METKA ATE.

The project includes the preparation of technical studies and the execution of critical structural and operational restoration works. Key objectives include restoring the structural integrity of the steel roof structures; as well as maintaining, repairing, and replacing sections of the metal framework and polycarbonate roofing.

This 61.35-million-euro project is part of a broader 111-million-euro modernization effort aimed at renovating the entire OAKA complex.

The project, part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0”, is funded by the EU through the NextGenerationEU initiative.

The signing ceremony was attended by Alternate Sports Minister Ioannis Vroutsis, OAKA Director-General Konstantinos Chalioris, Deputy CEO of Growthfund Panagiotis Stampoulidis, and other key stakeholders.

“It’s a historic day for Greek sports. Twenty-one years later, OAKA is getting a new lease on life,” said Vroutsis, adding that the project was “technically demanding”. He reassured that it will to be carried out “with absolute commitment to quality and transparency”.

“The safety of the country’s sports facilities has been a non-negotiable priority for the government and this important project is part of the broader plan to upgrade OAKA, with the aim of making it fully renewed, functional and modern for athletes and the new generation of Greek sports,” Minister Vroutsis said.
