A 30-year-old man tragically lost his life while swimming at Kathisma Beach in Lefkada (Lefkas) over the weekend. According to local reports, the victim, named Stefanos, was vacationing on the island with friends in celebration of his upcoming wedding.
Stefanos, originally from Trikala and a member of a well-known family that owns a chain of car dealerships, had planned to marry the love of his life on June 14. In what was meant to be a joyful pre-wedding getaway, he and his friends traveled to Lefkada for his bachelor party, while his fiancée was celebrating her own bachelorette on a different island.
The tragic incident occurred when Stefanos entered the sea at the popular Kathisma Beach. Strong, choppy waves are believed to have overpowered him shortly after he dove into the water. Despite the presence of his friends, no one was able to reach him in time, and the young man drowned.
His lifeless body was eventually carried by the waves to the far end of the beach, where it was found washed ashore. Emergency services, including the fire brigade and paramedics from EKAB, responded promptly and managed to recover his body and transport it to the local hospital.
The news has sent shockwaves through both Lefkada and his hometown of Trikala, where preparations had been underway for what was meant to be one of the happiest days of his life.
