The airport on the island of Naxos is currently without runway lighting, following the removal of lights as part of ongoing expansion and runway widening works. While daytime operations remain unaffected, the lack of lighting has raised serious concerns about the airport’s ability to handle emergency night operations, including medical evacuations.
According to reports, the first phase of the construction project has been completed, during which the runway lights were dismantled to facilitate the work. Since March 10, the airport has been operating without nighttime lighting.
Although night flights to the Greek islands are not regularly scheduled—most flights occur during daylight or early evening—emergency services often rely on the airport during off-hours. Helicopters such as Chinooks and NH-90s, which are equipped for low-visibility landings, can still access the runway, but smaller aircraft that require visual guidance cannot.
Authorities initially chose not to reinstall the lights, anticipating that the runway would soon close again for the next phase of construction. However, the absence of lighting sparked concerns from local officials and medical services, who emphasized the critical importance of nighttime accessibility.
In response, the airport manager of Naxos has formally requested portable lighting systems to address the issue. These temporary runway lights are now being delivered to the island, ensuring that the airport can accommodate aircraft in emergency situations, even during night hours.
The expansion project, expected to last several months, aims to improve the island’s air travel infrastructure. However, local residents and emergency responders are urging authorities to prioritize operational safety during the transition period.
