The fire department is evacuating workers and visitors at a hotel in Rhodes located on the northwest coast of the Dodecanese island following a gas leak from an outdoor storage facility belonging to a large hotel complex.

According to local news outlet Rodiaki, authorities responded immediately, closing off the road to and from the hotel complex (located on Iraklidon Avenue) to allow for the safe emptying of the gas tank. Passersby and guests were evacuated within a wide perimeter as a precaution.

The gas is being released through a safety relief valve, and officials estimate the entire tank will be emptied shortly, after which the situation is expected to stabilize.

For safety reasons, drivers are urged to avoid the area—from the Faneromeni junction to the location of the Sheraton hotel—until the process is fully completed.
