A major wildfire broke out in Monemvasia, Laconia, on the Peloponnese, on Monday afternoon, June 23, triggering an immediate response from the Greek Fire Service.
The blaze ignited in a rural forested area near Karavostasi, fanned by strong winds that complicated firefighting efforts.
Authorities swiftly mobilized a significant force, deploying 44 firefighters, including three ground teams from the 9th Special Forestry Operations Unit, supported by 10 fire trucks, four aircraft, and one helicopter. Water tankers from the Civil Protection service also assisted the operation.
Meanwhile, another fire that erupted earlier the same day, around 5:00 a.m., in Kato Asites, Heraklion municipality, in Crete, has now been brought under control. The fire scorched olive groves and a section of forested hillside near the village.
As part of the investigation into the incident, one man was taken in for questioning but was later released without charges.
The response involved a large-scale operation with 27 vehicles, 120 firefighters, seven Special Forestry Operations Unit teams, one Special Disaster Response Unit, three helicopters, and municipal water tankers.
Despite the containment, firefighting units remain stationed in the area as a precautionary measure.
