Tottenham Hotspur has sacked Ange Postecoglou, despite the Greek-Australian leading his team to winning the Europa League Cup last month, the first trophy for the Premier League club in 17 years.
The London-based club released a statement on Friday evening reading, “Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties.
“Big Ange,” as the 59-year-old Australian became known, paid the price for Spurs’ shocking domestic campaign, during which they lost 22 matches and finished in 17th place, despite having one of the wealthiest squads in the world.
Postecoglou had impressed following the victory over Manchester United in Bilbao—bringing silverware back to North London for the first time since 2008 and securing a spot in next season’s Champions League.
However, chairman Daniel Levy decided that another change on the bench is necessary—Tottenham are now welcoming their fifth permanent manager of the decade.
Postecoglou has won 47 of the 101 matches he has managed for Tottenham, with 15 draws and 39 losses, since joining the London club from Celtic two years ago.
