On Thursday, an Air India flight departing from Ahmedabad and bound for London crashed shortly after takeoff, killing more than 240 people on board. Remarkably, one passenger survived.
Rescue workers continued search efforts on Friday for missing persons and aircraft debris after the plane slammed into a medical college hostel in Ahmedabad.
The aircraft, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, was carrying 242 people and is now considered the world’s deadliest aviation disaster in over a decade.
According to the Associated Press, the passenger list included 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian.
Part of the aircraft struck a dining facility at the medical college, killing at least five students and injuring another 50.
The sole survivor, Vishwashkumar Ramesh, reportedly “walked” away from the crash with non-life-threatening injuries, according to AP.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash. Preliminary video footage shows the aircraft ascending steeply after takeoff before losing altitude and crashing, resulting in a massive fireball.
This marks the first recorded crash of a Boeing 787 aircraft, according to the Aviation Safety Network database.
