Iran has informed mediators from Qatar and Oman that it is unwilling to engage in ceasefire negotiations while under ongoing Israeli attacks, raising concerns of further escalation in an already volatile conflict. The disclosure was made by an official familiar with the communications, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation.

“The Iranians informed Qatari and Omani mediators that they will only pursue serious negotiations once Iran has completed its response to the Israeli pre-emptive strikes,” the official stated. Iran made it “clear that it will not negotiate while under attack,” the source added.

The conflict intensified after Israel launched a surprise attack on Iran early Friday morning, targeting key elements of Iran’s military leadership and causing damage to its nuclear facilities. Israel has indicated that its military campaign will continue to escalate in the coming days.

In response, Iran has vowed severe retaliation, warning that it will “open the gates of hell,” marking one of the most dangerous escalations in the longstanding hostilities between the two nations.

Contrary to some media reports, the official emphasized that Iran has not asked Qatar and Oman to engage the United States for ceasefire negotiations or to renew nuclear talks. These reports were described as inaccurate.

Iran’s foreign ministry has not issued any public statement in response to Reuters’ inquiries, and neither Qatar’s foreign ministry nor Oman’s ministry of information have provided comments on the matter.

Both Qatar and Oman have a history of mediating sensitive diplomatic negotiations involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. Oman, in particular, has been involved in facilitating nuclear talks between Washington and Tehran, although the most recent round of discussions was canceled shortly after Israel’s recent offensive. Qatar has also played a key role, most recently helping mediate a prisoner swap agreement between the United States and Iran in 2023.
