Israel has agreed to finalize the terms of a proposed 60-day ceasefire with Hamas in Gaza, following a plan put forward by U.S. President Donald Trump, the president confirmed on Tuesday. The ongoing war, now in its twentieth month, has resulted in a dire humanitarian crisis for civilians in the region.
“Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions to finalize a 60-day ceasefire, during which we will work with all parties to bring this war to an end,” Trump announced on Truth Social, after what he described as a “productive” meeting between American and Israeli officials in Washington.
At the same time, Trump called on Hamas to accept what he referred to as the “final” proposal. He noted that the terms would be conveyed through Qatar and Egypt, the two countries mediating the indirect talks between the Palestinian Islamist group and the Israeli government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“I hope, for the good of the Middle East, that Hamas accepts this deal,” Trump added, emphasizing the gravity of the moment by typing the final five words in all caps: “IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE.”
Hamas has not issued a response, for the time being.
