Mount Etna on the island of Sicily in Italy erupted today, according to international media reports. Tourists started leaving the area in a hurry as black clouds could be seen billowing up from the summit of the volcano.
The Volcanic Ash Advisory Center Toulouse (VAAC) issued a brief warning for aviation due to the eruption. Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano, has been rumbling more lately.
The volcano has been very active so far in 2025, with lava bombs and lava fountains bursting out.
The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy said that the volcano was experiencing strong Strombolian explosions—a type of eruption—“of“ growing intensity.”
