The much-awaited telephone call between U.S. President Donald and Russian President Vladimir Putin has ended with scant details leaked about the steps forward to reach a peace settlement or ceasefire in Ukraine.
Putin described the conversation, which lasted two hours, as sincere and useful. “A ceasefire with Ukraine is possible once agreements are reached,” the Russian president said following his call with Trump. “We are generally on the right track,” he added.
Putin thanked Donald Trump for supporting the resumption of talks between Moscow and Kyiv, claiming that the American president “acknowledged Russia’s commitment to peace in Ukraine.”
The Russian state news agency TASS reported that Putin stated Russia and Ukraine must agree on “compromises that suit both sides” before a ceasefire can be reached. He reiterated his support for a “peaceful resolution to the crisis in Ukraine” and said the talks are “generally on the right track.”
The phone call follows a round of peace talks between a Russian and Ukrainian delegation hosted in Istanbul, Turkey, last week, which ended in a stalemate, with the Ukrainian side accusing Russia of raising “unrealistic demands.” The only positive outcome was the exchange of 1,000 prisoners of war between the two combatants.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke by phone with U.S. President Donald Trump before the Trump–Putin call, according to a source familiar with the matter, as reported by Reuters.
The Kremlin sought to lower expectations regarding the outcome of today’s phone conversation. As reported by the Russian state news agency TASS, President Putin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, stated that ending the war in Ukraine would require “rather painstaking and, perhaps, prolonged work.”
